I've been watching the growth of online professional networks for about a decade now. I would say that these split into two main types - relationship based and connection based. Tools like Plaxo are for ease of connection only. Linkedin is probably the best of the relationship based tools. Perhaps the worst of all the relationship based tools is Ecademy which is mainly comprised of slightly weird people offering strange life enhancing nonsense. The site has something of a history of treating its customers with contempt and has made some collaborations with rather shady organisations over the years. Not recommended for serious business people.

Ok so as an upholstery website I was up there for awille, and then dropped off. If you put on upholstery Shoreline I'm up there. Also about how long does it take when adding keywords for Google to recognize them, and make you rank higher?

You hit it right on the head Rory!

Blogging is so important in building value and trust within your brand! The more value you can provide the more you can position yourself as a leader within your industry!

Blogging is also great because you are creating sharable content! There are many factors to high rankings in search engines but "the amount of shares" a piece of content receives in the social media is starting to have more weight in how high a post can rank.

Outside of just optimizing for your services, blogging allows you to pick low hanging key terms to rank high for that will drive additional traffic to your site!

This, more than any one article I've read so far, distills the dilemma facing us as we struggle to get started with social media. We think we know what we want, but are too easily sidetracked with the next great idea. Slow down, simplify, focus, strategize and begin. Easier said than done!
